The problem I see most in the game of golf by amatuers is the failure to lay up.  When you know you can not reach the green, do not try to just get as close as possible.  If you do that you will leave yourselve a difficult 3/4 wedge shot.  The proper play is to put yourself in position to have a full swing approach, which is much more comfortable.
